These are two of my favorite hand tools. The top one is a Japanese Hand Digging Hoe. I use it a lot for general weeding, and also for cutting out sod. The bottom one is a Japanese Digging Knife, also known as a "hori hori" knife. It's great for getting weeds out that are close to other plants that you don't want to pull out with the weed. Both are pretty sharp, which is one of the reasons I think they work so well.

I wear gloves when I wield these tools, just to be a little safer!
Hi Carol, I am trying to kind a souce for the hoe that is pictured on your blog. I used to get it from Smith a Hawkins, but they don't have them anymore and the various web sites for japanese tools do not have ones with the same configuration. Do you have a place to buy them? Thanks, Feather
I also bought this mine at Smith & Hawkins, but did notice they don't have it on their website anymore. You might just call them.

Hi CArol, Lovely picture of you with the lawn mower! The hori-hori is by far my absolute favorite! A friend presented me with it when I got my first "P-Patch" . Which btw has nothing to do with one or the other "P" derives from Picardo Farm, the first community garden in Seattle. P-Patches are organic community gardens. No need for pesticides when you dig out the weeds before they go to seed! And daffodils have many purposes, from salad bar to chicory.
